Worship, witness and open dialogue mark a powerful visit from Commissioners Edward and Shelley Hill
The visit of Chief of the Staff Commissioner Edward Hill and Commissioner Shelley Hill (World Secretary for Women’s Ministries) to Chatham Corps, UK, offered much encouragement, challenge and hope.
Commissioners Hill led the morning worship service, which was complemented by contributions from band, songsters, singing company and worship group. Commissioner Edward Hill referred to John 21, reminding everyone of the miraculous catch of fish. He shared how the gap between defeat and victory can sometimes be very small, and encouraged everyone to always be moving forward faithfully, even in times of difficulty.
Following the meeting, there was a march of witness and an open-air service in the town centre. Many people were contacted during this service, so much so that the supply of leaflets was exhausted! The service was well received by passers-by and the corps resolved to continue and increase its ministry in the town centre.
Afternoon fellowship and open dialogue
After a faith lunch and time of fellowship, Corps Mission Secretary Tim Scott led the afternoon meeting which culminated in an informative question-and-answer session. The commissioners discussed a wide array of issues that gave insight into their lives and ministry, as well as their vision for the future of The Salvation Army.

They discussed challenges, such as the need for growth and financial sustainability in some parts of the world, and also cause for hope, sharing that there is a waiting list for officer training in certain territories. The commissioners explained how The Salvation Army’s Global Strategic Framework, Compass, will help to address these issues.
The day concluded with a rousing rendition of ‘The Day of Victory’s Coming’ and the benediction.
