The Emmanuel House

Soup kitchen, homeless shelter, and sober living environment serving Silicon Valley for over 50 years.

Fill a belly, feed a soul

For over 50 years, our kitchens have prepared hot meals for men, women, and children throughout the Silicon Valley. In addition, Emmanuel House also provides overnight shelter services to homeless men.

From Addict to Advocate

"When I first came to The Salvation Army, I was lost, homeless, and living a life of addiction. It was during my time at the Army's Adult Rehabilitation Center that I was able to find purpose and meaning for my life. After 20 years of sobriety and now working as the Director for our Men's Shelter, I am able to be a testimony to the grace of God and encouragement to the men we serve on a daily basis." -Dan, Director of Emmanuel House

With a growing homeless population in Santa Clara and throughout the Bay Area, the Emmanuel House serves an important need in our community. Here are some of the services we provide:

Soup Kitchen

Since our doors first opened in 1967, our kitchens have prepared hot meals for anyone who comes to us hungry. Men, women, and children of any age are welcome to eat a free nutritious lunch or dinner Monday through Saturday. Lunch is held from 12:15 - 1:00 pm, and dinner is served from 5:15 - 6:00 pm.

Overnight Shelter Services

The Emmanuel House, located at 405 North 4th Street, San Jose, CA 95112, provides overnight shelter services 365 days a year to men. Clients can line up for overnight beds at 3:30 pm, intake occurs at 4:00 pm. You must be there in person to sign up for a bed. After taking a shower and stowing baggage in a locked room for the night, each man receives a bed assignment, blanket, pillow, and sheets, which are stripped and laundered the next morning.

Our kitchen serves dinner to overnighters, Monday through Saturday at 4:30 pm, as well as a continental breakfast starting at 6:00 am.

Bridge Housing Program

Bridge Housing is a short-term, transitional residency program of up to two years for men who have income. To participate, individuals must maintain sobriety, follow house rules, and actively participate in the program. Bridge Housing Program clients pay a weekly program fee, and $20 of the fee is set aside in a personal savings account that participants can use toward a room or apartment when they leave the program.
